YOUNG people who want to take part in a pageant aimed at equipping young people with the platform to make a difference in the community, can now enter for the Kingfisher FM Teen Miss and Mr Port Elizabeth 2012 competition.

According to organiser, Juanita Smit of Rolemodels Pagents, their slogan, “Inspiring Hope in the Heart of the Community”, is synonymous with this pageant.

“The aim is to create hope, since it seems that society has lost its sense of hope, which is resulting in a lack of enthusiasm and expectation from life itself,” said Smit.

The event which was first held in 1995, originally only for little girls, has grown and been expanded to include the youth at large, males and females in age categories between 4 and 19 years.

According to Smit, all contestants will undergo a 6-week training programme in order to enhance confidence, communication skills and grooming; and most importantly for the youth to become aware of the needs of the less privileged in society.

“We endeavour to teach even young children, that they too can make a difference. This is important as we believe that values are taught in the growing years and we cannot expect a generation to be sensitive to the needs of others if they have been de-sensitised in their formative years,” said Smit.

All the contestants are expected to do charity work in the six-week training period and the winners then have an obligation to continue supporting Rolemodels Foundation and other needy individuals during their year of reign.

According to Smit, Rolemodels Foundation is a registered non-profit organisation which has three projects: the Imfundo Project (A pre-school and after-school centre building project aimed at pre-schooler readiness programmes, and an after-school facility for school-going youth to complete homework and assignments); the Tamakhulu Project (aimed at restoring dignity to senior citizens in impoverished communities) and the Asante Project (supporting abused women and children).

The theme for this year’s pageant is the “The Olympics”, since it is an Olympic year.

The Junior age categories are: Tiny Miss PE (4 - 6), Little Miss PE (7 - 9), Pre-Teen Miss PE (10-12), Tiny Mr PE (4-6), Master PE (7-9) and Pre-Teen Mr PE (10-12). The Senior age categories are: Jnr Teen Miss PE (13-16), Jnr Teen Mr PE (13-16), Teen Miss PE (17-19) and Teen Mr PE (17-19).

Entries close at 6pm on February 24. To enter one will need a completed entry form, which can be obtained from the Kingfisher FM Studio in Newton Street, from Scapaholics at Walmer Park or from RoleModels SA offices at King’s Court (next to Dischem) which must be handed in with a head-and-shoulders postcard-size photo. The entry fee is R100.
