Home / Golfers swing for education

A HUGE field of 250 golfers will be swinging in the name of Education in the annual Algoa FM Charity Golf Day at Port Elizabeth Golf Club on March 6.

This year, all proceeds of the day will be going to the Masinyusane Development Organisation in New Brighton. The non-profit organisation was founded in September 2008 and is committed to the empowerment of disadvantaged South Africans through education and entrepreneurship.

“There is a natural mix between sport and education,” said Algoa FM Managing Director, Dave Tiltmann.

“We have given this year’s golf day an Olympic theme in celebration of the 2012 London Olympics. In terms of our chosen beneficiary, Masinyusane has seen thousands of high school learners participate in its tutoring sessions, extra-curricular activities, leadership programmes, and tertiary workshops. Education in the Eastern Cape is facing a number of challenges and hopefully our golf day will have a positive impact in improving the lot of our young learners.”

In June 2009, Masinyusane, together with the management of Lwandlekazi high school in New Brighton, designed and began to implement a comprehensive process of upliftment entitled Lwandlekazi 100%. After only 18 months of intervention, the school’s pass-rate has tripled to 47%.

“Their goal is to achieve a 100% pass rate through the Lwandlekazi project,” said Tiltmann. “We hope that the proceeds from the Algoa FM charity golf day will help them reach their goal in the not too distant future.”

The competition format for this year’s Algoa FM charity golf day is a betterball stableford competition. It is open to all golfers with an official handicap.

There are also sponsorship options available and companies who support the day benefit from valuable on air exposure on AlgoaFM.
